A pilot plant for the production of steel HYBRIT, which runs exclusively on hydrogen fuel, has been launched in Sweden.
The pilot plant opened in Luleå today becamethe world's first steel industry in the world to completely eliminate coking coal and any other fossil fuel. Test operations for the production of pig iron using the new technology began immediately after the official launch of the installation with the participation of Prime Minister Stefan Leuven.
In addition to switching to renewablefuel, new technology will help to minimize the amount of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Only one HYBRIT project will reduce Sweden's CO2 emissions by 10%.
SSAB is behind the innovation initiative,LKAB and Vattenfall, who joined forces in 2016 to create an experimental setup. Works on the construction of the plant began in 2018.
With the help of HYBRIT, Sweden plans to find a solution for the production of fossil-free steel by 2035.
Last year, a German metallurgical companyThyssen-Krupp also announced plans to stop using coking coal for steel production and switch completely to hydrogen by 2050.
